“I wanted it to be you!”
Says Kathleen as tears roll down her cheeks. She has finally met the guy she’s been texting on AOL. If you recall history, AOL was the first internet messaging service before Myspace, before Facebook, and before all the current sleazy dating apps.
And then Joe Fox kisses Kathleen. The song 🎵 in the background is “Somewhere over the Rainbow”.
Meg Ryan, playing Kathleen and Tom Hanks playing Joe Fox. The almost typical love story, poor girl meets rich man, they fall in love forever and ever.
“You’ve Got Mail.”
That’s the title of the movie. “You’ve Got Mail.”
For years I have told men, upon them politely asking, with no expectations of a semblance of any meaningful answer..
“Julie, what is your favorite movie?”
“You’ve got mail.”
My standard answer. Because I probably couldn’t remember any other movies that sparked me into desiring and yearning for that everlasting undying I would gladly die for you love…
And when you asked him what his favorite movie was, he might say “Shawshank Redemption “, or “Top Gun”, or “The Godfather “…
Ahhhh… love have I longed for…
I did watch Sleepless in Seattle too. Because, Meg Ryan and Tom Hanks…
“I wanted it to be you.”
How many years have I longed to meet someone to whom I could say this?
Thanksgiving Day 2023….
I watched a marathon of movies. And then up popped “You’ve Got Mail”
At first, it was underwhelming. It has a very shallow storyline. What have I become? What has become of me? Have I become so jaded?
I suffered through it…
Till the scene finale! As Kathleen cried when she saw Joe Fox turn up at the meeting point with the dog 🐕 Brinkley, and they kiss and Kathleen says “I wanted it to be you!”…
I am relieved to feel the tears well up in my eyes. I am happy that my throat tightens and I can’t breathe.
And so I can truthfully say this…
Thank you to whoever is out there looking out for me. I have ascertained that I still believe in love. Not with any man. With a soulmate…
He is out there after all. Looking for me as desperately as I am looking for him. I won’t settle for less. Would that I would meet him before I breathe my last…
In the meantime, let me watch Pride and Prejudice… Mr Darcy awaits… I shall cry again… And Four Weddings and a Funeral, with the delightful Hugh Grant!
My future person is somewhere watching Shawshank Redemption. Or perhaps The Godfather. In rapid succession and on rewind mode…
He is binging on the movies that defined men of a certain age…
Soon…
We shall cuddle on that couch together. As we fight over whether to watch Shawshank or yet another chic flick… He will let me win.
