That Girl with the Pen

On swines and bee vomit…

On swines and bee vomit…

I watched a lot of videos on YouTube University in which many Chinese families partitioned off one bedroom at the back of the house specifically for hosting 5 to 10 pigs. Those pigs 🐖 provide a lot of money for the family. And they slaughter one for the family to eat all year-round until the next harvest.

Typically pigs take 6 months or slightly more to mature. Also pigs give birth twice a year to as many as 15 piglets at a go, therefore one pig could mother 30 piglets every year. Amazing facts…

China is the largest producer of pigs in the world. Every family has pigs. USA is now the second largest producer of pigs.

Paradoxically, African countries are the biggest importers of pig products. I say paradoxical because many Africans still sneer at the thought of keeping pigs because they believe pigs are the dirtiest animals.

These archaic beliefs originated from the colonialists who with gusto told the stories about a white man named Jesus of Nazareth drove all the terrible spirits into pigs. Thus if one ate pigs, the wild spirits would reside in them. Never mind that those pigs died thousands of years ago.

Also, never mind that the same Africans adore honey and eat it as a health food…

Honey is the vomit from bees. In simple terms, bees eat stuff, vomit it out, and it’s packaged as honey…

Today, take the challenge of adding an extra room to the back of or to the side of your house and keep one mother pig. Any mabati structure will do. It’s not that complicated. Forget the parables of the swines which that pastor uses to instill fear in you.

In one year, you will have 30 pigs. In two years, how many pigs could you have?

Maths isn’t my strongest suit. But someday, I plan on starting a piggery…
